themselves to the charitable objects of the Institution which
helps to spread Western Methods of Medicine in the Chinese Com-
-munity they will deserve the full support of the Government.
By opening branches in the East and West ends of the town to
receive the dying and the dead the Directors are now co-operat-
-ing with the Government in the attempt to lessen the obnoxious
practice of depositing corpses, particularly those of young
m
children, the streets and open spaces of the town. The misunder-
-standing with regard to the use of the Infectious Diseases
Branch Hospital referred to by the Registrar-General was dealt
book with in my Despatch No. 342 of the 16th. September, 1904.
The large increase in the contribu-

-tions by the Chinese for the support of the District Watchmen
Force, from $12,648 in 1901 to $23,241 in the year under
review, has placed the fund upon a most satisfactory basis and
Mr. May approved the addition of 13 men to the Force and the
purchase of a site in the Western District for the erection of
further quarters.
The conduct of the Force was not
wholly satisfactory, but it is hoped that better men will be
attracted by the increase of pay which I sanctioned in August
last, so that it should coincide approximately with the pay
drawn by the Chinese Police.
